North America

North America is a continent built on a grand scale. It stretches from the Arctic tundra of Canada to the tropical reefs of the Caribbean, and from the cliff-lined Pacific coast to the Atlantic shores where European settlers first made landfall. It is a place of extremes: the canyonlands of the American Southwest, the skyscraper canyons of New York and Chicago, the colonial plazas of Mexico, and the rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama. In the United States, you can drive for days through deserts, mountains, forests, and prairies without ever exhausting the variety. Mexico layers ancient indigenous civilisations beneath Spanish colonial baroque and a famously vibrant modern culture. The smaller countries of Central America and the Caribbean punch far above their size: Belize's barrier reef, Costa Rica's cloud forests, the Dominican Republic's beaches, and the relaxed rhythm of the Bahamas.
